Snow, Sleet Storm Sweeps Southern States;
5th Snowiest Winter in Atlanta Since 1936

A storm system moving eastward along the Gulf Coast brought freezing precipitation to the northern portions of several southern states Sunday night and Monday. The 3.7" of snow reported in Atlanta yesterday was supplemented by an additional 0.7" today, bringing the January total to 4.4".

Snowfall amounts of 8" were common across northernmost Georgia, with a few areas of 10", especially at higher elevations.

According to National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) records, this is now the 5th snowiest January in the roughly 80 years since observations began at Atlanta's airport, exceeding the 3.6" in 1987. The snowiest January was in 1936, when 8.0" fell. Atlanta's snowiest winter was also in 1936, with 10.9". This season to date is now the 5th snowiest winter. A seasonal total of 2.0" represents the 75th percentile of Atlanta winter snowfall; the median is 0.6".

For the month of January through yesterday, Atlanta's average temperature of 42.3° is 0.3° below the climatological mean.
